You love your children too much to settle for ordinary education.

A one-room schoolhouse community for K-12 families who believe learning should be intentional, relational, and life-giving - serving Washington, Union, New Haven & surrounding Missouri communities.

Does any of this sound familiar?

You pulled your kids from the traditional school system - or decided early on it wasn't for you - because something felt off. Maybe the pace was wrong. Maybe the values weren't aligned. Maybe your child was disappearing inside a building that didn't know his name.

So you brought them home. And you love it. The freedom, the flexibility, the closeness. But some days the weight of it all lands squarely on your shoulders. The curriculum decisions, the accountability, the worry that you're somehow not enough. You want your children to have community - real friendships, real learning, real mentorship - without sacrificing everything that made homeschooling the right choice in the first place.

That's exactly why Heart & Heritage exists.

A different kind of learning — rooted in something real.

Heart & Heritage Academy is a hybrid learning community on six acres in Beaufort, Missouri, built around the one-room schoolhouse model and the time-tested philosophy of Charlotte Mason.

Students in kindergarten through twelfth grade gather together Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday — learning academics, developing character, working in the garden, caring for animals, and discovering what they're capable of.

Short days. Rich learning. Real life.

You remain your child's primary educator. We come alongside you — with structure, community, and genuine care — for the three days a week that make the other four possible.

Built by someone who left the system — and never looked back.

I became a teacher because it was all I ever wanted to be. But the classroom I found myself in wasn't the one I had imagined. I was in trouble constantly — not because I wasn't effective, but because I refused to teach children to memorize and regurgitate. I taught them to think. To question. To love learning.

The system didn't have much room for that.

So I left. I homeschooled all four of my own children from the beginning, straight through graduation. My youngest will walk across the stage this May — before he turns seventeen. Along the way I coached and mentored dozens of homeschool families who were doing the same hard, beautiful work you're doing right now.

And then in 2020, in the middle of a very uncertain world, God gave me a vision. A one-room schoolhouse. A community of children learning together — not just academics, but life. Gardens and animals and real skills alongside literature and writing and mathematics.

Heart & Heritage was born out of that vision. And it has become something more beautiful than I imagined.

What Heart & Heritage families say

Heart & Heritage was a lifeline for us in transitioning to homeschooling after being in private and public sectors with our older kids. The background Kari has in education and the experience she has with homeschooling makes her such a valuable asset to new homeschooling families or veteran homeschoolers. For us, we needed help narrowing down all the options and having someone with experience to help us make it work. I now have 3 children at Heart & Heritage and we LOVE it!!! My children are learning, excelling academically, learning valuable life skills, and making friendships. The focus of Heart & Heritage is to both provide a quality education and to nurture each child’s development so that they have the ability to grow into responsible and reliable individuals. My children have grown so much during their time there, and I can’t wait to see what more they accomplish!
